Coimbatore: A training programme in meditation skills was conducted for the senior judicial officers and lawyers practicing in various courts in the district.

It was organised under instructions from the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, A.P. Shah. It is expected to help and fine-tune their proficiency in handling litigations and litigants, a release from the District Court here has said.

The training programme was conducted on July 1 and July 2 at the District Court Complex. It was inaugurated by the Principal District Sessions Judge, S.F. Akbar. The Coimbatore Bar Association president, N.D. Sundaravadivelu and the secretary, M.N. Manoharan, attended.

Lawyers from the Madras High Court, Sriram Panju, Yasod Vardhan and Mohammed Rafiq imparted the training. Six judicial officers from Coimbatore city, K. Uthirapathy (Sessions Judge for Bomb Blast cases), G. Balu (First Additional Sub-Ordinate Judge), Meena Sathish (Additional Sub-Ordinate Judge), M.P. Ram (III Additional District Musniff), Shanti Chezhian (Judicial Magistrate IV), S. Ravishankar (Judicial Magistrate No VI) and 30 lawyers took part.

In an effort aimed at reducing the number of new cases and the number of pending cases, an initiative to popularise Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) was taken up by the State Legal Services Authority by organising a training programme for two days at Coimbatore.

As many as 30 lawyers and six judges of the district underwent the training to become qualified mediators to resolve disputes. The programme aimed at training over 200 lawyers in the days to come.
