GULBARGA: Orthopaedic surgeon S.S. Patil, who has written several books on medicine in Kannada, and dramatist Kodli Kantappa Master, have been selected to receive the Kayaka Sanmana award. The award is given every year by the Udayonmukha Yuva Barahagarara Balaga to distinguished personalities for their contribution to society and Kannada language. At a press conference here on Tuesday, president of the Balaga Doulatraya Patil Mahoor said K.S. Pavitra, a psychiatrist and freelance journalist was been selected for the "Best Young Writer Award" for the year.
Function
The awards will be presented on July 9. Mr. Mahoor said a five-member selection committee headed by Ravindra Karjagi had considered several applications from all the over the State. Dr. S.S. Patil, who retired as a senior surgeon in the Government General Hospital this year, was closely involved in popularising Kannada and was the founder-president of the District Kannada Vaidya Sahitya Parishat and vice-president of the Dr. P.S. Shankar Pratishthan. Kodli Kantappa Master, a retired schoolteacher, is a well-known dramatist. He has penned more than 30 dramas and his dramas were very popular among professional troupes. Mr. Mahoor said that Dr. Pavitra hailed from Shimoga district.
