GULBARGA: The Gulbarga District Kannada Sahitya Parishat will organise a five-month-long literary and cultural festival from July to November to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of the Reorganisation of States and merging of all Kannada speaking areas with Karnataka in 1956.
Events in schools, colleges
Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, parishat president Veerabhadra Simpi said that it would organise cultural and literary meets, organise symposia and special lecture series on the poets and writers of the region throughout the district and in all schools and colleges from this month. He said that the parishat has identified 50 poets and writers from the region who enriched the language with their immortal works and whose monumental work for the development and protection of the language has gone unrecognised. During the five-month-long celebrations, the speakers from different parts of the State would be invited to give special lectures on the contribution of these 50 poets and writers of the region for the enrichment of the language. Mr. Simpi said that the main effort of the parishat was to project the contribution of poets and writers of the region for the development of the country. He said the parishat had also decided to bring out a 400-page special commemorative volume to mark the celebrations and the writers from different parts of the State would contribute articles on these selected 50 poets and writers. Mr. Simpi said that the parishat had constituted an editorial committee headed by writer Swamirao Kulkarni for the commemorative volume.
Portraits
The parishat had entrusted the task of preparing portraits of these poets and writers to painter and Nadoja Award winner J.H. Khanderao, who along with 15 other painters would take up the work. The parishat also proposes to organise an All India Poets' meet during the celebration in Gulbarga city. The celebrations will begin on July 9.
