SOCCER FEVER: Children watching a football match on TV in Bangalore. Photo: K. Murali Kumar
Bangalore: When soccer fever has gripped almost everyone in the city, why should less privileged children feel left out? This event was planned to bring them closer to the history of the game and, perhaps, even enthuse some of them become footballers in future. Seventymm, the city's first online movie rental company, celebrated the spirit of soccer at The Only Place, a familiar restaurant for most Bangaloreans, with the children of Christel House by screening a documentary, "Century of Football", which captures 100 years of the drama, passion, excitement and despair that only this game can evoke. Vice-Principal of Christel House Sandhya Jain, teacher Rama Radhakrishnan and 40 children studying in 8th Standard saw the documentary. The children showed great enthusiasm and were engrossed in watching the documentary. "We are happy that the children had a good time and we hope to have more occasions for them to cheer in future," said Subhanker Sarker, Chief Operating Officer of Seventymm. "We are delighted that Seventymm picked our school for this event. Our children enjoyed the day out," said Raju Shahani, executive advisor of Christel House India. He expressed his gratitude for this rare opportunity for his children "I enjoyed the documentary. I want to be a part of the Indian soccer team and win the world cup," says Nanda Kumar, a student. Other boys, for whom names such as Ronaldo, Rooney and Zidane have now become familiar, echoed similar sentiments. First, of course, they will have to play at the State and national levels and then just hope India moves up in international ratings. That just may happen by the time they grow up. The girls also showed great enthusiasm and enjoyed watching the game. Members of the management of The Only Place were present to oversee the arrangements; the children were fed well and entertained even better.
