15-hour power cut in Bidar

Bidar: Bidar went without power for 15 hours from midnight on Monday till Tuesday evening. Incessant rain and strong winds damaged the main distributing transformer. Repairs took longer than anticipated because of the rain, Gulbarga Electric Supply Company officials said.

Water supply was affected as enough water could not be pumped to the storage tanks. — Staff Correspondent

`Ask pay panel to submit report'

BANGALORE: The Karnataka State Government Employees Association has urged the Government to instruct the recently constituted Pay Commission to submit its report at the earliest.

Association president L. Bhyrappa told presspersons here on Monday that when the Centre had already announced that it would be setting up the Sixth Pay Commission for its employees, "our commission is yet to give its final recommendations. Once the Centre constitutes the next commission, the State Pay Commission will lose its relevance," he said. — Staff Reporter

`Communal harmony will be ensured'

BANGALORE: Home Minister M.P. Prakash told the Legislative Assembly on Monday that the Government would take all steps necessary to ensure communal harmony in Hampi where members of two communities were disputing the right to offer prayers at the local Veerana temple.

Replying to C.T. Ravi (BJP), Mr. Prakash said a few Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) activists and representatives of voluntary organisations had launched a "Save Hampi" campaign recently alleging that temple land had been encroached upon. Some RSS members had opposed the urs being observed at a dargah, which is located near the temple. As a preventive measure, the police arrested 12 persons, and they were later released on bail, the Minister said.

Ban on lotteries sought

DAVANGERE: The All India Democratic Youth Organisation (AIDYO) and All India Mahila Samskruthika Sanghatane will hold a rally in Bangalore on July 13 demanding that the State Government ban the sale of lotteries. Ramanjanappa, secretary of AIDYO, said that lottery mania was wreaking havoc on society reducing lakhs of families to penury. Unfortunately poor, middle class and lower middle class people were falling prey to this, he noted. The rally will begin from Chikka Lal Bagh. — Staff Correspondent

Man arrested

BELLARY: The Bellary police arrested a man on charges of theft of two-wheelers. Nine mopeds and 16 bicycles valued at Rs. 1.02 lakh were recovered from him. Police nabbed him near Patel Nagar. The man was identified as Vankai Krishnagoud, a cycle repair shop owner in Maddur in Andhra Pradesh. Police said that he admitted to stealing several mopeds and cycles kept in front of the Durgamma temple and at other places in Bellary and one moped in Gangavati. Police recovered the stolen vehicles from Bobbur village in Andhra Pradesh and from the Railway Station cycle stand. Gandhi Nagar police registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Commits suicide

HASSAN: Sundaramma (35), wife of Jagadeesh, along with her two children Vijayalakshmi (9) and Somashekara (7) committed suicide by jumping into a well in Doddaganni village of Channarayapatna taluk on Tuesday morning, according to police. It is alleged in a complaint registered by Channarayaptna town police that she committed suicide with her children owing to harassment of her mother-in-law. — Staff Correspondent

Women electrocuted

BIJAPUR: Two women died on the spot when they came into contact with a live wire at Aheri Thanda in the taluk on Monday. The Bijapur Rural police gave their names as Shanthabayi Nathu Jadhav (45), and Anjana Motilal Rathod (25). The accident occurred when they had gone to the farmhouse to start the motor pump. — Staff Correspondent

Held on murder charge

Raichur: The Raichur police arrested Ramappa and his wife, Nagamma on the charge of murdering his elder brother's wife, Gundamma, over a property dispute, in Maski town on Monday. The police said that Gundamma was strangled to death on Sunday. The Maski police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Killed in accident

Raichur: Ramachndrappa was killed on the spot when a jeep hit him on Raichur-Kalmala Road near Vijayanagar Camp near here on Tuesday. The Raichur Rural police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Man dies in collision

Raichur: A person was killed on the spot and another was injured seriously in a collision involving a tractor and a motorcycle. The two were travelling on the motorcycle on Tidigol-Khanihal Road in Sindhanur taluk on Sunday. The police identified the dead as Doddabassappa and the injured as Bassappa. The Turvihal police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Stake money seized

Raichur: The Raicur police arrested six persons on the charge of gambling and seized Rs. 4,500 from them on Monday. All have been remanded in judicial custody. Cases have been registered.
