Yanam municipal council to be sworn in today

Mahe council to take oath on July 10


  • Swearing-in for Pondicherry, Oulgaret and Karaikal municipal councils to be decided in a day or two
  • 1,243 representatives to various categories have been elected during polls in all regions
  • Rs 130 crore will be released to all civic bodies for 2006-2007 financial year

    Pondicherry: All the ten councillors and the chairman of the Yanam municipal council would be sworn in on Wednesday (July 5) at the Children's Auditorium in Yanam, according to the State Election Commissioner R. Narayana.

    He told newsmen here on Tuesday that the Deputy Director of Municipal Administration in Yanam would administer the oath of office to each of the new functionaries. The Congress nominee, Gidla Chandra Rao, was elected as the chairman of the council in Yanam. Of the ten councillors, seven candidates sponsored by the Congress and one AIADMK nominee, were returned to the council. Mr. Narayana said that all the 15 councillors and the newly elected chairman of Mahe municipal council would be sworn in on July 10.

    The dates for swearing in of the members and the chairmen of Pondicherry, Oulgaret and Karaikal municipalities would be decided in a day or two.

    He said that the period of operation of the model code of conduct enforced in the context of the civic polls came to an end. He noted that there was full cooperation from all sections and also political parties for the smooth conduct of the civic polls. District Election Officer G. Theva Needhi Dhas, who was also present at press conference, said that a total of 1,243 representatives to various categories of councillors, village presidents and panchayat ward members were elected.

    The Local Administration Director Mr. E. Vallavan said that as much as Rs 130 crore would be released to all civic bodies for 2006-2007 financial year to implement various schemes for improvement of civic amenities, compared to Rs 71 crore released last fiscal. Officers of the State Election Commission were also present at the press conference.
