BANGALORE: On a day when top-seeded players reigned supreme, Shashank Menon and Mithun Manjunath bucked the trend to win the boys under-13 and under-10 singles titles respectively in the Tata Indicom State junior badminton tournament that concluded at the KBA Courts here on Tuesday. Shashank, the fourth seed, after scalping the top-seeded Vinay Hari in the semifinals here on Monday, continued his upset spree and defeated third-seeded Rajas Jawalkar 21-12, 24-22 in the final to clinch the title. In the under-10 singles final, fourth-seeded Mithun proved too tough for S. Sudeep, the second seed. Mithun won at 21-13, 20-22, 21-12. Meanwhile top-seeds Anup Kiran and Monisha Vinayak clinched the boys under-19 and girls under-19 singles titles respectively. The results (all finals): Boys under-19: Anup Kiran bt Aditya Prakash 21-19, 24-22. Under-16: Aditya Prakash bt S-2 Prakash Jolly 21-15, 21-11. Under-13: Shashank Menon bt S-3 Rajas Jawalkar 21-12, 24-22. Under-10: Mithun Manjunath bt S-2 S. Sudeep 21-13, 20-22, 21-12. Girls under-19: Monisha Vinayak bt S-2 Shruti Sridhar 22-20, 21-9. Under-16: Ankita Ashok bt Shruthi Sridhar 23-25, 21-18, 21-14. Doubles: Adfa Taqvi and Shruthi Sridhar bt Ankita Ashok and Varsha Srinivas 21-11, 21-13. Under-13: Uttara Prakash bt S-6 Rishika 21-15, 21-14. Under-10: K. Reshma bt P. Priya 21-4, 21-5.
Hat-trick by Bopanna
Bopanna slammed four goals, inclusive of a hat-trick, and powered MEG Boys to rout Beglaum District 6-1 and also helped his team enter the final of the Deccan Herald-Karnataka State Hockey Association's `C' division championship at the KSHA Stadium here on Tuesday. In Group `B', Bopanna scored in the 35th, 37th, 47th and 53rd minutes while Vinayak (13th) and Arun Kumar (59th) scored the other two goals. Imran Bepari (15th) struck the lone goal for Belgaum District. CRPF prevailed over Young Stars, Hubli 4-3 in a pool `A' tie, riding on a brace by Kediya (24th and 39th minutes). Dung Dung (8th minute) and Vijaypal Singh (46th minute) were the other scorers. For the Youngs Stars, Jeshwanth (31st), Dandiyal (37th) and Deepak (42nd), found the mark. The finalist from Group `A' will emerge on Wednesday and the final is scheduled on July 7.
Madyalkar shines
Vijay Madyalkar's match-haul of eight wickets guided Malleswaram Gymkhana to a six-wicket victory over Bangalore United CC (1) in a KSCA Group I, first division league match here recently. The scores: Bangalore United CC (1) 196 in 65 overs (Girish Rao 50, Vijay Madyalkar four for 83, Prasanna Patil four for 23) and 160 in 38.2 overs (G.K. Anil Kumar 48, Vijay Madyalkar four for 43) lost to Malleswaram Gymkhana 296 in 66.2 overs (Shoaib Manager 68, Mukesh 48, C. Raghu four for 100) and 62 for four in eight overs.
Faheem passes away
Former billiards player S.A. Faheem, 34, passed away in Chennai according to a Karnataka State Billiards Association press release. Faheem had won many tournaments in the past, both at the senior and junior levels.
