Rights panel seeks report on treatment to Maudhany

Issues fresh notice to Additional Director-General of Prison Government has ordered the prison authorities to provide Ayurvedic treatment to Maudhany

CHENNAI: The State Human Rights Commission on Tuesday issued a fresh notice to the Additional Director-General of Prison (ADGP) demanding a report on the treatment given to People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader A.N. Maudhany in Coimbatore Central Prison.

Acting Chairperson of the Commission Justice S. Thangaraj said the report should be sent within two weeks.

The Commission had issued a notice to the ADGP in September last year after receiving petitions from Mr. Maudhany's wife and the secretary, Kerala Muslim Aikya Vedi (KMAV).

Wife's plea

In her petition, Sufiya Maudhany said her husband was in jail for the last eight years (in connection with the Coimbatore serial blasts case) without trial. He had lost one leg in a bomb blast, which was an attempt on his life. He was also suffering from diabetes, hypertension and heart ailment.

She said the Supreme Court had ordered that suitable treatment should be provided to him. But he was denied the basic human right.

Visitors were not allowed to meet him. It was through them that he was earlier getting the medicines. In the name of search, jail authorities disturbed him at midnight.

She had prayed that the Commission should ensure proper medical treatment to him. A similar petition was sent in July last year by the KMAV.

The Tamil Nadu Government has ordered the prison authorities to provide Ayurvedic treatment to Mr. Maudhany.

Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achutanandan had taken up the matter with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi recently.
