New room for State Cabinet meetings

CHENNAI: Meetings of the State Cabinet will be held in another room on the ground floor. Till now, the Cabinet meetings were held in a room adjoining the Chief Minister's chamber. There is not enough room for all the Ministers to sit around a table and some are forced to sit behind, in a second row, official sources said. The new room, which was inspected by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Tuesday, is the one where the meetings of the Legislative Council were held earlier. The Council has been defunct for a couple of decades and, even if revived, cannot be held in the room because it does not have enough room to accommodate all the members and the large press corps. — Special Correspondent

Solatium to kin of girl killed in wall collapse

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Tuesday ordered payment of Rs. 50,000 to the parents of a student who died following a wall collapse in her school in Tiruvaiyaru West village.

Ten-year-old Sridevi died when a wall in Bala Ganapathy Vidyasala Primary School collapsed. The families of three other students, who were injured would receive Rs. 15,000 each. — Special Correspondent

Antulay meets Prince of Arcot

CHENNAI: Union Minister for Minority Affairs A.R. Antulay along with his daughter Ms. Neelam Antulay met Prince of Arcot Mohammed Abdul Ali at his residence on Monday. The Prince urged the Union Minister to implement the welfare schemes and measures concerning the minorities. Prominent citizens and diplomatic corps and personalities from different communities participated. A dinner was hosted in honour of the Minister. — Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: An HR company has announced a recruitment drive for candidates with BCA or B.Sc degree in computer science, IT, software or related studies. Anaesthetists' meet

THANJAVUR: Six hundred anaesthetists will participate in a two-day annual State conference of the Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry, here on July 8 and 9, says organising secretary A.L. Meenakshisundaram. Fortyfive pharmaceutical companies will put up stalls at an exhibition organised in connection with the conference. Union Minister of State for Finance S.S. Bodies found hanging

KULITHALAI: The bodies of an elderly man and woman were found hanging from a tree on Tuesday.

Passersby noticed the bodies that hung from a branch of a tree in a mango grove across the Karur-Tiruchi railway line near the Krishnarayapuram Taluk Office and reported the matter to the authorities.

The identity of the deceased could not be established immediately. Police have registered a case and are investigating.

Applications invited

PUDUKOTTAI: Applications are invited from candidates for admission to certificate courses in music being offered by the Government Music School here.

In a press note issued here on Monday, Collector S. J. Chiru said duration of the course would be three years with an annual fee of Rs. 152. The courses offered included vocal, bharatham, nagaswaram, thavil and Thevaram.

Candidates seeking admission to vocal and bharatham should have passed standard VII; for the other three courses, they should possess proficiency in reading and writing in Tamil. Those interested can contact the Headmaster.

Mettur level

Tiruchi : The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 104.80 feet on Tuesday. The inflow was 20,284 cusecs and the outflow 12,970 cusecs.

One killed in accident

Nagercoil: One person was killed on the spot in a road accident on Tuesday.

According to police sources, Rasayan of Vetturnimadam was working as a salesman in a TASMAC retail outlet at Thuckalay.

While returning homw from work, an unidentified vehicle from the opposite direction hit and killed him on the spot.

The police have registered a case and are investigating.

Man ends life

NAGERCOIL: A coolie committed suicide by hanging himself in a rubber grove on Tuesday.

According to sources, Thangayan (58) of Arumanai took the extreme step following acute stomach pain. Further investigation is on.

Autorickshaw hits bicycle; one hurt

Tuticorin: A 12-year-old boy was injured when an autorickshaw hit the bicycle he was riding at Vallanad on Monday.

The accident took place while Sudalaimani was crossing a bridge.

He was admitted to Tirunelveli Medical College and Hospital with head injuries.

The Murappanad police are on the look out for the autorickshaw driver based on a complaint lodged by Sundaram, father of the injured.

Chain snatched

Tuticorin: The police are on the look out for two persons who had snatched a chain from Shanti (35) near Thattarmadam on Monday night.

The incident occurred while the woman was walking along Muthaloor-Thattarmadam road with her husband, when two persons who came in a motorbike snatched her five-sovereign chain.

Bootleggers held

Tuticorin: The police have arrested two persons at Arumuganeri on Monday on the charge of possessing a can of toddy with them.

According to police sources, Y. Dasan (45) and P. Ramiah (50) were arrested from a forest area based on a tip-off. The accused were later remanded to judicial custody under Tamil Nadu Prohibition Act.

Solidarity Day

ERODE: Private college teachers of Madras, Thiruvalluvar, Periyar, Bharathiar and Bharathidasan Universities, belong to the Association of University Teachers (AUT), observed Solidarity Day on July 3 as a part of their diamond jubilee year celebration. The teachers assembled in front of their respective colleges and took a pledge of solidarity and commitment. The AUT would conduct seven zonal conferences during July-August this year to deliberate on the topic, `National Priority vis-à-vis Contemporary Reality in Higher Education', said association president N. Senthamarai. He also said the AUT would host the 25th Annual Academic Conference-Seminar of the All India Federation of University and College Teachers Organisations in Chennai on 13th, 14th and 15th of October. The topic of the conference would be `Share knowledge, Share development'.

Killed in accident

METTUR: A 55-year-old man was killed in a road accident here on Tuesday. Police said Chinnan of ITI Matta Salai was crossing the road when a motorcycle hit him. He sustained serious injuries and died on way to the hospital. The Mettur Police registered a case.
