NILAMBUR: The police and Tribal Development Department officials traced five Adivasi girls who had been missing from Indira Gandhi Memorial Model Residential School here since Monday morning. The girls, who belong to the Katunaikar tribes, were found at Palangara in Kattilappadam, near Karulayi, on Tuesday morning. The girls are high school students. It is uncertain why and how they left the school hostel early on Monday. The girls were found after a joint search operation launched by the police and Tribal Development Department officials, with the help of local people. The police said the girls had suffered no harm. The police registered a case against them. The school functions at Jawahar Colony here exclusively for the tribes of Katunaikars and Cholanaikars. The school, which earlier functioned at Manjeri, was shifted to the new premises last year. The Integrated Tribal Development Project (ITDP), functioning under the Tribal Development Department, looks after the school. The ITDP has 10 hostels for Adivasi children, including those at Odakkayam, Thrikkalangode, Mampad, Nilambur, Pothukallu, Palemadu and Manimooli. It runs two tailoring centres at Chungathara and Nilambur, besides an Ayurvedic dispensary at Karulayi for Adivasis.
