Kannur: A day-long hartal called by the Hindu Aikyavedi on Tuesday in protest against arrest of one of its leaders affected life in the district. Many passengers, including office-goers, within and outside the district could not reach their destinations, as public transport vehicles suspended operations. Government offices and banks functioned with thin attendance, official sources said. Most shops and business houses remained closed, while schools could not function as people remained indoors in view of the sudden hartal call. Two-wheelers and private vehicles were seen plying on the deserted roads. No untoward incidents were reported. Valsan Thillankeri, Aiykavedi and Rashtriya Swayamasevak Sangh leader, was arrested on Monday near Iritty in connection with the recent murder of a Communist Party of India (Marxist) activist, K.K. Yakoob. The Bharatiya Janata Party district unit said the arrest was a move to tarnish the image of Sangh Parivar. PTI
