ALAPPUZHA: An 80-year-old man was killed and several houses were destroyed in the district in heavy rain and sea erosion on Tuesday. Kochucherukkan, of Kandaloor panchayat limits, near Kayamkulam, was killed when he fell into a flooded paddy field on Tuesday morning. An official press release said 20 houses were completely destroyed and 268 houses damaged in the district in the heavy rain, wind and sea erosion in the past 24 hours. Sea erosion continued to be severe in Neerkunnam area, near Ambalappuzha. Five houses were completely destroyed here on Tuesday. Several houses were partially damaged. Seventy houses have been completely destroyed in the area since the onset of monsoon. The residents of the area complained that more than 700 coconut trees had been uprooted by the waves. They also noted that sea erosion was the severest in those parts where seawall did not exist. Minister for Cooperation G. Sudhakaran visited the calamity-hit areas in the district on Tuesday. Mr. Sudhakaran intervened to release an aid of Rs. 50,000 from the State Government due to the family of a victim. The money had been help up at Haripad sub-treasury. Mr. Sudhakaran handed over the amount to the relatives of Chakkolil Thekkethil Naniamma, who was killed in monsoon-related calamities.
