Swollen rivers may maroon many villages

Staff Reporter

ADILABAD: A swollen Penganga river on the Andhra Pradesh-Maharashtra border threatened to cut off many villages in Jainad mandal on Tuesday, its waters having already inundated hundreds of acres of agricultural land.

The river was flowing full as a result of continuous rainfall for the last two days in its catchment areas in Maharashtra. The Pranahita river, which flows on the eastern side of the district, is also swollen.

Villages like Akoli, Sangdi, Kamai, Pendalwada in Jainad mandal will be cut off in case the level of water in the river rises further. Land under temporary submergence will get silt deposits due to water logging.

Chosen crops

Soya bean and cotton crop is cultivated extensively in the mandal and the crop is in the nascent stage at present.

Adilabad district received 77 mm of rainfall cumulatively until 8 a.m. Tuesday with Koutala mandal receiving almost 200 mm. Jainad received 170 mm while Adilabad got 120 mm. Rain continued throughout Tuesday.
