KOZHIKODE: The Muslim Service Society has demanded that the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development release a grant sanctioned for developing madrassas. In a statement here on Tuesday, the general secretary of the society said Rs.59 lakhs had been sanctioned for 82 madrassas in seven districts of the State. A memorandum to this effect was submitted to Minister for Education M.A. Baby by the National Minorities Education Review Committee member P.M. Mohammed Koya. The memorandum said Rs. 79.04 lakhs was paid in March 2006 for paying salary to two teachers in each madrassa and tuition fees for students who are educationally backward. The remainder of the sum could not be paid because of the announcement of the Assembly elections. Applications for paying the sum recommended by the State grants-in-aid committee for 429 madrassas had been forwarded to the Ministry, the memorandum noted. Malappuram has 36 madrassas, Kozhikode 25, Wayanad one, Thrissur and Palakkad three each, Kannur nine and Kasaragod five.
