Dharmapuri: The Collector, M. Chandrasekaran, on Tuesday reviewed the measures taken to control chikungunya in the district. As many as 1,049 persons - 351 in urban areas and 698 in rural areas - were affected with the disease in Dharmapuri district.
Personal hygiene
The district administration formed 33 medical teams, including one each at primary health centres to provide medical aid to those affected. Mr. Chandrasekaran said 1,685 teams, including NGOs, elected representatives of local bodies, students and village head nurses were deputed to all habitations in the district to create awareness among the public on safe water supply, personal hygiene, disposal of solid waste and protection against the mosquito causing the disease - Aedes egypti.
Monitoring
An official in the rank of a Deputy Collector was appointed in each block to monitor and collect information on the outbreak in the villages. About 200 blood samples were collected from the affected, and sent to the Institute of Virology, Pune, and the Institute of Vector Control and Zoonoses, Hosur. Preventive measures taken upincluded cleaningoverhead tanks, chlorination of drinking water sources and disposal of garbage. The Collector said the situation was under control and there was no need for panic.
