KURNOOL: The Congress retained its hold on Kurnool district but the TDP too gained substantially compared to the previous elections. The Congress is set to form 33 mandal parishads while the TDP gained majority in 16. By evening, Congress won 354 MPTCs, TDP 250, CPI 14 and CPI(M) 10.

In a surprising development, the TDP under the leadership of Byreddy Rajasekhar Reddy won in Nandikotkur, Pagidyala, Midtur and Jupadu Bungalow mandal parishads. Katasani Ramireddy's defection to the TDP mattered as Banaganapalli and Bethamcharla mandals went to TDP.

Mareppa's segment

In Allagadda Assembly segment, Rudravaram and Chagalamarri went to TDP. Kolimigundla mandal parishad was also retained by TDP. In Aluru Assembly segment, which is represented by Minister for Lift Irrigation M. Mareppa, the Congress fared badly while the TDP gained an upper hand.

In Kodumur, the tussle between MLA M. Sikhamani and MP Kotla Jayasurya Prakasa Reddy reflected in the election result with many of the independents winning the MPTCs. The results surprised even the TDP.

Electoral gains

However, party leaders analysed that they could translate the people's dissatisfaction into electoral gains wherever the TDP leadership was strong. At other places, they could not create confidence among the people to come out openly, the TDP leaders said.

The Congress leadership too was jubilant. The trend displayed in MPTCs was not seen in Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency seats. More ZPTCs went in favour of the Congress despite the MPP snatched by TDP. DCC president S. Raghurami Reddy said, "The Congress is going to form the Zilla Parishad with a comfortable majority."

Poised for win

KADAPA: The Congress is poised to make a clean sweep in Kadapa district by winning 47 of 50 ZPTC seats and a majority of the 552 MPTC seats. TDP is set to win two ZPTC seats and CPI one.

Congress candidate for Kadapa Zilla Parishad chairmanship Devireddy Jyothi Reddy won Simhadripuram ZPTC seat with a thumping margin of 17,203 votes. Ms. Jyothi Reddy secured 17,605 votes while her nearest rival Chavva Thulasamma of TDP managed to get only 402 votes.

Modam Dasaratha Naik of Congress won Pulivendula ZPTC seat by a margin of 5,791 votes. G. Venkataramanamma of Congress won Lingala ZPTC seat by a confortable margin of 14,856 votes.
