KOCHI: A national conference on snakebite will be held at the Amrita Hospital here on July 24 and 25. International experts, representatives from various hospitals and scientists are expected to attend. In a background paper, Ian D. Simpson, herpetologist, says that snakebite causes 50,000 deaths a year in India. The number is higher than in any other country. In 2004, A.K. Sengupta and Alex Von Hildebrand of WHO established a Snake-bite Treatment Group for India, led by Mr. Simpson to determine ways to improve first aid, treatment and education relating to snakebite. The national conference is sponsored by the WHO. It brings together the top 40 Indian and International experts in snakebite management, treatment and research. This is expected to develop a single, evidence based protocol for India in Snakebite First Aid.
