Plan funds to be restored to local bodies

Staff Reporter

For effective implementation of decentralisation of powers, says Chief Minister

PALAKKAD: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said the Left Democratic Front (LDF) Government would restore the powers and the Plan funds to local bodies for the effective implementation of decentralisation of powers in the State.

Inaugurating the 39th State conference of the Kerala Municipal and Corporation Staff Union at Town Hall here on Tuesday, the Chief Minister said the previous United Democratic Front (UDF) Government had taken away the powers and the fund from local bodies during their tenure.

The UDF Government had cut the fund allocation to local bodies, thus disabling them from implementing various schemes for the welfare of the people, the Chief Minister said.

Mr. Achuthanandan urged the service organisations to help the Government in providing a `corruption-free and efficient' civil service in administration of the State.

The Chief Minister said the Government had declared its resolve to build a corruption-free and people-friendly administration.

"While you fight for your rights, you are a part of society and the political set-up prevailing in the State. The people expect help from the administration. There should be an efficient, transparent and corruption-free administration to fulfil the commitment the Government has promised to the people," Mr. Achuthanandan said.

M. Joshua, president of the Staff Union, presided over the function.
