Tricky situation catapults Congress to top

Jayaraj Manepalli

TENALI (GUNTUR DT.): There was tension in the air as counting began in the Manchikalapudi and Pedakonduru Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies (MPTCs).. At the end of the final round, there arose a peculiar situation. Candidates of both TDP and Congress had equal number of votes. The polling staff searched for valid votes from among the 25 already declared invalid. Finally they could find a vote, which was cast in favour of the Congress. The TDP agents present there could not digest the fact and insisted that recounting from among the invalid votes be done again.

The officials recounted and found two more votes, again in favour of the Congress. Finally the Congress candidate, Thota Nagamani was declared elected with a margin of three votes. The same was the situation from Pedakonduru MPTC where the Congress won with a three-vote majority.

The Congress's MPTC candidate Gogineni Baby Kalpana won from Pedaravuru with a 32-vote majority over the TDP candidate Dundi Venkateshwara Rao.

The Congress also had to concede defeat from Nandivelugu-I to the TDP candidate who had won with a majority of 11 votes.

In Tenali, it was a time for celebration for Tenali MLA Nadendla Manohar as his `Man Friday' and ZPTC candidate Shakamuri Vishnu Prasad got elected with a majority of 950 votes.

In Vemuru, the TDP had to concede defeat to the Congress candidate.
