VIJAYAWADA: Claiming a moral victory in the ZPTC and MPTC elections, district leaders of the Telugu Desam Party on Tuesday asserted that the mandate exposed the "hollow" claims of the Congress about its good governance. TDP leaders said their party could have won a majority of ZPTC and MPTC seats, had the ruling party not used the money and muscle power in the elections. The TDP received a jolt in the Nandigama Assembly constituency with the Congress candidates wresting Chandarlapadu and Nandigama ZPTC seats.
Big relief
The special efforts made by the ruling party to erode the strength of TDP MLA Devineni Umamaheswara Rao had paid off in this election. The TDP had big relief in the fact that it made gains in Mylavaram, Nuzvid, Avanigadda, Nidumolu, Vuyyur, Gannavaram, Kaikalur and Mudinepalli Assembly segments. Though the party lost both Mandavalli and Kalidindi ZPTC seats, it won Kaikaluru ZPTC and a majority of MPTCs there and regained strength in parts of the Kolleru belt. TDP district president Ambati Brahmanaiah expressed satisfaction over the improved performance of the TDP when compared to the general and municipal elections. "As per latest reports, TDP got 16 ZPTCs and the CPI(M) won two ZPTCs. We could perform better, despite the excessive use of money and muscle power by the ruling party," he added. CPI (M) district secretary Umamaheswara Rao said the combined efforts of the TDP-CPI (M) reaped good results in these elections. He asserted that the future alignments of the political parties would largely depend on their pro-poor policies.
