VIJAYAWADA: The Congress has captured the Krishna zilla parishad by bagging 32 of the total 49 ZPTCs, but the opposition TDP, proving sceptics wrong, came up with an impressive performance by winning 15 ZPTCs. The TDP's pre-poll ally, CPI (M), won the remaining two seats. Belying the claim of district Ministers, MPs and MLAs that the Congress would win 40 ZPTCs, the voters gave the ruling party only seven seats more than the required majority of 25 seats in the 49-member zilla parishad. Still, the Congress' tally is almost two-third of the total number of seats. The opposition TDP did exceedingly well in MPTCs too, bagging 352 seats of the 821, whose results were available at 11 p.m. The Congress won 403 MPTCs, while CPI (M) won 18 and the CPI 11. There were 37 independents who emerged victorious.
Complete picture
A clear picture relating to how many mandals each party can win would emerge only after it becomes clear whether the party that secured majority in a mandal has a candidate of the same community for which mandal presidentship has been reserved. But it was clear that even in those mandals where the Congress won the ZPTC, the party could not do equally well in the MPTCs falling in that ZPTC. The ZPTCs that the Congress won are Thotlavalluru, from where the aspirant for ZP chairperson post and former MP K. P. Reddayya won by a majority of 3,539 votes, Agiripalli, Mudinepalli, Nandivada, Machilipatnam, Pedana, Avanigadda, Jaggayypeta, Chatrai, Ibrahimpatnam, Kruthivennu, Kalidindi, Movva, from where another serious contender for the chairperson post and industrialist Kukkala Nageswara Rao won by highest margin of 9,299 votes, Nandigama, G. Konduru, Penugranchiprolu, Mylavaram, Guduru, Ghantasala, Vissannpeta, Pamidimukkala, Chandarlapadu, Mandavalli, Vijayawada Rural, Kanchikacherla, Vatsavai, Veerulapadu, Nagayalanka, Kankipadu and Tiruvuru, Bapulapadu and Penamaluru. TDP bagged Pamarru, Pedaparupudi, Gudlavalleru, Mopidevi, Challapalli, Nuzivid, Vuyyuru, Unguturu, A. Konduru, Gampalagudem, Reddygudem, Gudivada, Musunuru, Bantumilli, from where TDP's Kagita Venkata Rao (former chief whip) won by 259 votes, and Kaikaluru. CPI (M) won in Koduru and Gannavaram.
