BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday rejected the bail petitions filed by two persons accused of rape. State Public Prosecutor (SPP) S. Dore Raju told the court that one of them, Kumar, was accused of raping a 28-year-old native of Chikmagalur on December 15, 2005. Mr. Raju said the rape victim decided to take revenge with the help of her husband, Krishnappa. She invited Kumar's wife to her house and allegedly helped Krishnappa rape her. Krishnappa allegedly threatened Kumar's wife that she would be killed if she spoke about the incident. Kumar and Krishnappa were arrested. On Tuesday, they moved the court for bail. Justice Ajit Gunjal rejected their petitions.
Slum dwellers' plea
More than 400 slum dwellers on Tuesday moved the High Court seeking a direction to the authorities to allot houses under the Ashraya scheme in Lingarajapuram, Bangalore. In their public interest litigation (PIL) petition, 416 slum dwellers sought a direction to the authorities to consider their application for allotment of houses under the 2002 guidelines issued by the Government. A Division Bench comprising Justice B. Padmaraj and Justice S. Abdul Nazeer ordered issue of notices to the Government and other respondents and adjourned hearing of the case.

A Division Bench comprising Justice Padmaraj and Justice Nazeer on Tuesday ordered issue of notices to the State and other authorities on a PIL petition seeking a direction to the Government to preserve and protect government land at Mallasandra in Yeshwanthpur hobli. The petitioners claimed that the land was being used for illegal quarrying and other purposes. The Bench adjourned hearing of the case by four weeks.
Land to be vacated
A 14-year-old litigation involving land near the Wellington Lodge in Mysore ended on Monday. A Division Bench comprising Justice H. L. Dattu and Justice N. Ananda disposed of an appeal against eviction filed by a person who was in possession of the land (200 ft by 295 ft). He gave an undertaking to vacate the land within 10 months. The Wellington Lodge, which was declared as a monument in 1991, is under the Department of Archaeology and Museums. The department told the court that Mr. Janardhan was given the land on lease for six months in 1990. An extension of six months was given, following which the lease was not renewed. Mr. Janardhan, who had taken the land on lease, had challenged the eviction notice before the district court. After the court rejected his appeal, he moved the High Court. A single judge of the High Court rejected his petition and issued a direction for eviction. Mr. Janardhan filed a writ appeal, and the Division Bench disposed of the matter following the undertaking given by him.
Undertaking
Al-Ameen College of Pharmacy, Bangalore, on Monday gave an undertaking to the High Court that by June 30, 2007 it would vacate the rooms at Victoria Hospital occupied by it The college had petitioned the court questioning the notice issued to it to vacate the rooms immediately. The college was earlier permitted to use the rooms as part of its "drug information and adverse drug reaction monitoring centre" for educating its students.
