Medical college in Bidar unlikely before 2008

Staff Correspondent

The State is yet to file a fresh proposal

  • The first proposal, dated June 15, 2004, was rejected
  • The last date for filing a fresh proposal was June 15, 2006

Bidar: A government medical college is likely to be opened in Bidar only in 2008 as the State Government has failed to submit a fresh proposal for setting up the college by June 15, after the first proposal was rejected.

Medical Council of India (MCI) secretary A.R.N. Setalvad noted in a letter dated June 15 that the Government had not submitted a fresh proposal after the first proposal, dated June 15, 2004, was rejected.

The MCI has cited 28 major reasons for rejecting the proposal to set up a government medical college in Bidar. According to Dr. Setalvad's letter, the college cannot be approved until the Government makes a few "major changes in the college infrastructure and staff pattern immediately".

    Lack of teachers

The most important reason for rejecting the proposal is the lack of teachers and other staff. An MCI inspection team has noted that the Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Forensic Medicine and Community Medicine departments have not been formed. No teacher has been recruited.

The college needs four professors, 10 associate professors, five assistant professors, nine tutors, eight senior residents, 16 junior residents, and 63 nurses. Paramedical staff is "grossly inadequate", according to the MCI team. Of 15 posts, 10 are vacant. The hospital does not have a speech and hearing therapist.

    Building

The college building is not complete. The MCI has also cited lack of clinical materials and laboratory equipment, quarters for staff and hostels for students. There is no playground, and audiovisual equipment is yet to be installed.

The MCI team has objected to the manual registration and maintenance of records, and suggested computerisation of records. It has said the number of X-ray and other investigations done daily at the Bidar Government Hospital is inadequate for sanctioning a medical college. Histopathology reporting has not started, according to the report.
