PATHANAMTHITTA: Several houses were damaged and standing crops estimated to be worth lakhs of rupees destroyed in the high velocity winds that lashed different parts of the district during the past two days. Ranni, Mallappally and Adoor taluks are the worst affected. According to official sources, the loss owing to destruction of crops and damage to houses and other buildings in the district has been estimated at Rs.7,13,680. Official sources have pegged the agriculture and property loss in the district during the monsoon at Rs.3,72,30,836. The natural calamity has hit 31 villages in the district, according to official sources. The official data shows that 114 houses have been damaged and four houses destroyed in Ranni, Adoor, Konni and Mallappally on Monday. However, unofficial reports on Tuesday said at least 250 houses have been damaged and four houses destroyed during the past two days. At least 75 houses have been damaged in Ranni taluk alone, besides large-scale destruction of standing crops such as rubber and other cash crops. Two houses were destroyed in Angady panchayat in Ranni on Monday. A majority of the houses were damaged when trees got uprooted and fell on them. According to reports, 35 houses were damaged in Ayroor panchayat and 28 in Kozhencherry taluk. The tiled-roof of the St. George Knanaya Church hall at Gurunathanmannu, near Seethathode, caved in.
