MAJOR BREAKTHROUGH: The five persons who have been arrested in connection with idol theft cases in Shimoga.
SHIMOGA: The police have arrested five persons in connection with the theft of idols from some temples in the district. Disclosing this to presspersons here on Tuesday, Superintendent of Police Arun Chakravarthy said they were believed to be part of an inter-State gang of idol lifters. The police gave the names of the accused as Mehboob (23), Buren (18), Rasheed (18), and Chand Basha (23) of Humnabad taluk in Bidar district and Gudsab of Anavatti in Sorab taluk of Shimoga district. He said the accused, who were involved in series of temple theft cases in Sorab and Shikaripur taluks, were also involved in similar offences in Hirekerur in Haveri district and parts of Maharashtra. Mr. Chakravarthy said Mehboob, Buren and Rasheed had been arrested when they were moving around in a suspicious manner at Anavatti. During interrogation, they confessed that they were involved in many temple theft cases along with two more persons. Eighty idols had been recovered from the accused, he added.
