MCD teachers on contract basis

NEW DELHI: The Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Jai Kishan Sharma, and the Leader of the House, Jitender Kochar, on Tuesday said the civic body had re-engaged 3,400 teachers on a contract basis to fill the vacancies in its primary schools.

"This has been done to ensure that the studies of primary school students are not affected. The services of the teachers have been engaged up to September 30 or till the time new teachers selected by Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board join duty. These teachers have already worked on a contract basis in MCD schools,'' said Mr. Sharma.

New ward at Swami Dayanand Hospital

NEW DELHI: Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Ram Babu Sharma laid the foundation stone of a new ward at Swami Dayanand Hospital in Shahdara here on Tuesday. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi will construct the new ward on 1,740 sq. m at a cost of Rs. 4.62 crores.

Mr. Sharma said the hospital was important as it not only catered to the needs of citizens of East Delhi but also to those from neighbouring Uttar Pradesh. ``The number of patients coming to this hospital is increasing daily. MCD is committed to providing ultramodern diagnostic and treatment facilities here.''

Symposium on disability studies

NEW DELHI: The Society for Disability and Rehabilitation Studies in collaboration with HURITER, School of International Studies, at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) will organise a four-day national symposium on "Disability Studies in India: New Directions for Future'' at JNU's School of Arts and Aesthetics beginning today (Wednesday).

The objective of the symposium is to take stock of the status of studies and research on disability studies in the country. Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia is slated to inaugurate it.

Conference on FDI on July 20

NEW DELHI: Leaders of trade organisations from various States under the apex body of the Confederation of All-India Traders (CAIT) will hold a two-day national conference here beginning July 20. It will discuss various issues including Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and Value Added Tax.

"Apart from trade leaders, activists of several other organisations and groups opposing FDI in retail trade have been invited in an effort to form a common forum. We aim to launch a nationwide movement against FDI,'' said CAIT Secretary-General Praveen Khandelwal.
