Gram panchayatpoll notification

HYDERABAD: State Election Commissioner A.V.S. Reddy said that notification for gram panchayat elections would be issued between July 10 and 14. There are 21,822 gram panchayats going to polls on non-party basis. The elections would be held in three or four phases depending upon the size of the districts. There would be a gap of two to three days between each phase of polling, SEC secretary, G. N. Rao, told reporters earlier.

Tributes to freedom fighters

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee on Tuesday paid tributes to veteran freedom fighters Alluri Seetharama Raju and Pingali Venkaiah. D.V.Satyanarayana Rao, general secretarygarlanded the portrait of Seetharama Raju in connection with his 113th birth anniversary celebrations. The leaders also paid floral tributes to Venkaiah to mark his 43rd death anniversary. — Special Correspondent

Elected to head global forum

R.K.Chadha, group head of Seismology in the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), has been elected president of the International Natural Hazard Society at the recently-concluded Hazards-2006 Conference in Patras, Greece. Dr. Chadha is the first Indian to be elected to the prestigious international body, according to a press release. — Special Correspondent

Fee for MBA, MCA

Hyderabad: The tuition fee to be collected in private unaided MBA and MCA colleges for 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-2009 has been fixed at Rs 23,000 per annum for an "A" category seat and upto Rs 63,000 for `B' category seat. In these colleges, 80 per cent of the seats are to be filled in `A' category and the remaining in `B' category, as per the committee for fixation of fee structure. The committee Member Secretary Asutosh Mishra said the managements should not collect capitation fee or any other amount in addition to the fee prescribed. The colleges are also to collect fee only for one year in advance. — Special Correspondent

VIJAYAWADA: Vice-Chancellor of Dr. N.T.R. University of Health Sciences (DNTR-UHS) R. Sambasiva Rao has been elected president of Indian Society of Leptospirosis (ISL). He has been working as vice-president of the ISL since 1998. A multi-speciality association, the ISL aims at increasing awareness of doctors and the public about leptospirosis. It is an infection common in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra and Andaman & Nicobar Islands. — Staff Reporter

Pontiff hospitalised

KURNOOL: Pontiff of Mantralayam Mutt Sushameendra Teertha was admitted to hospital at Raichur in Karnataka after he developed low blood pressure and falling pulse rate. The 83-year-old Swamiji formally entrusted the job of running the mutt to his Diwan Susheelendrachar before he was shifted to Raichur. The temple authorities said Swamiji was recovering. — Staff Reporter

Ex-PM of Nepal visits Tirumala

TIRUMALA: Former prime minister of Nepal Sher Bahadur Deuba on Tuesday offered prayers at the temple of Lord Venkateswara here along with his family. He was accorded a warm reception by the TTD officials. Staff Reporter

Attack on photographer condemned

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Union of Working Journalists has condemned Monday's attack on the photographer of a Telugu daily in Kurnool by employees of a bar and restaurant. In a statement on Tuesday G. Anjaneyulu general secretary said the lensman was attacked while taking pictures of the bar that was allegedly being run without licence. - Special Correspondent

Rice distribution proposed

KURNOOL: The district administration has proposed distribution of rice under the nutritional diet scheme as part of the TB Control Project in Chenchu areas of Nallamala forest in Kurnool district. Surveys have indicated that response to drugs is poor among Chenchus.

Officers of the TB control programme say response to treatment is good wherever nutritional diet was supplied along with drugs. - Staff Reporter
