CUDDALORE: Two engine drivers suffered injuries when a Tiruchi-bound train hit a sugarcane-laden vehicle at an unmanned level crossing at Subramaniapuram near here on Tuesday. The police said the accident occurred when a tractor pulling twin trailers, on its way from Pethanankuppam to Nellikuppam, was crossing the railway gate in the morning. One of the trailers got stuck on the track and because of its weight, it could not be pulled free. The train hit the trailer and dragged it along the track for some distance before coming to a halt. The other trailer was turned upside down, emptying its contents near the track. Due to the impact, the front windscreen of the train was damaged. Drivers Noor Mohammad (54) and his assistant Ayyappan (45), who had to brake suddenly upon seeing the tractor-trailer on the track, suffered head injuries after being thrown against the windscreen.
