NIZAMABAD: Telugu Desam Party workers under the leadership of party district president and former Minister Pocharam Srinivas Reddy staged a dharna in front of the counting centre at Bodhan, demanding recounting of votes relating to Beerkur Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency, on Tuesday. Mr. Reddy alleged that the returning officer under the pressure of Banswada MLA, Bajireddy Govardhan declared the election in favour of the Congress nominee though the TDP candidate won it by a margin of 18 votes. Initially, the TDP was declared winner. Later, the Congress MLA came to the centre and brought pressure on the authorities, he charged. He said the authorities had not counting 1000 votes in the recounting process. Out of the total of 24,695 votes polled only 23,695 were counted in the recounting. A bundle of 1000 votes was set aside, he alleged. He described the election results a clear verdict against the Congress rule. Had the elections been conducted in a free and fair manner the TDP would have captured the Zilla Parishad, he said.
Congress reaction
Meanwhile, the District Congress Committee president, G. Gangadhar, said the results were expected as people voted for his party as "many welfare schemes were introduced by the Congress Government." He also said the people of the district had faith in the Congress as it had taken up lift irrigation schemes, distributed ration cards and pensions.
