ANXIOUS WAIT: People gather outside the Government Polytechnic College for Boys in Nizamabad, where the counting is being held, on Tuesday.
NIZAMABAD: The Congress wrested the Zilla Parishad from Telangana Rashtra Samiti by winning 20 ZPTCs out of the total of 36 in the district. The TDP considerably improved its position compared to the last elections by winning 12 ZPTCs. The TRS had to be content with just four. Elections were conducted for 35 ZPTCs as the Machareddy seat was unanimously bagged by the Congress candidate, L. Anitha. Out of the two ZPTCs -- Navipet and Bheemgal -- left by the Congress to its ally, Navipet went in favour of the TDP, while TRS won in Bheemgal.
KCR's kin loses
The TRS chief and Union Labour Minister, K. Chandrasekhar Rao's relative, R. Ramkishan Rao lost the seat to V. Mohan Reddy of TDP. Mr. Mohan Reddy is tipped to be the candidate for ZP chairperson's post if the TDP gains majority. He won the seat by a margin of 1,423 votes. The TDP gave a tough fight to Congress in several constituencies. The margin of victory by Congress candidates was slender and - in Varni (230), Beerkur (259), Bichkunda (630) and Kotagiri (930). Recounting was conducted for Beerkur with TDP raising objection as it lost the seat by only 11 votes in the first counting.

Venkataramana Reddy (Tadwai), Akula Lalitha (Makloor) and Taher Bin Hamdan (Sirikonda).
