Chennai: Despite installation of a waste-to-power plant in Koyambedu, solid waste management is still a problem in the vegetable market. Decaying vegetables, leaves, flowers and fruits can be found lying uncleared on most days.

Much of this biodegradable garbage is left unutilised. Vegetable traders said contractors selected by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority fail to collect and dispose garbage effectively.

`Improve maintenance'

"We need improvement not only in garbage collection but in overall market maintenance," said Koyambedu Periyar Market Licensed Vendors Association president B. Rajasekaran.

They, however, acknowledge that not all members pay the maintenance fee to the CMDA.

Encroachments in the market contribute to lack of proper garbage disposal. The situation worsens during rains, posing health hazards.
