CHENNAI
: Tiruvallur police have traced the lorry that knocked down a head constable last week at Periyapalayam. The driver was arrested on Monday, police said. Police identified the driver as A.Rehmathulla (42) of Mochampedu near Cuddapah. He was remanded to custody on Tuesday. Police have also seized the Andhra Pradesh registered lorry involved in the accident.
J. Rajendran, Superintendent of Police, Tiruvallur, said constable Annamalai was on night rounds on June 28, when the lorry, laden with bales of cloth, which was on its way to Chennai from Ahmedabad, hit him at Periyapalayam while taking a turn. The lorry driver stopped the vehicle a few hundred yards away, but sensing trouble, drove away. He returned home after unloading the goods at Chennai.
Mr Rajendran said special parties formed to trace the truck checked vehicles that passed through Nagalapuram check post in Andhra Pradesh, the Oothukkottai check post and the Cholavaram Toll Plaza. It was discovered that one of the vehicles that went to Chennai was the one that knocked down the policeman. The vehicle was traced to Cuddapah in Andhra Pradesh, after which police zeroed in on Rehmathulla.
