Staff Reporter

TEST OF SKILLS: Mock drill in progress at the urea plant of Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers Ltd. in Mangalore on Tuesday.

MANGALORE: Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers Ltd. (MCF) conducted a mock drill to ensure the preparedness for emergencies at their urea plant here recently.

An ammonium carbonate leak at the plant was emergency simulated. A siren was blown to declare the emergency and the response team swung into action under the supervision of the chief-emergency coordinator.

MCF fire crew, along with the rescue team, operated the water monitors, to spray lots of water and scrub away the ammonia. The injured were taken to the occupational health centre where medical care was provided. Actions such as shutting down the plant, searching for causalities, and blocking of storm water drains to prevent ammonia laden water from going out of the factory premises were carried out as part of the emergency plan.
