MANGALORE: The A.J. Hospital and Research Centre here has extended its offer of doing knee replacement surgeries at reduced cost, up to September 2006, according to Prashanth Marla, Medical Director of the hospital. He said in a release that the hospital did 23 knee replacement surgeries and 78 orthroscopic reconstructive surgeries at reduced cost in the past two months. Dr. Marla said many people suffered from arthritis and wearing out of knee joints. The worn out joints required total knee replacement. These surgeries were expensive and people fear about the complications. Keyhole surgery of the knee joint (arthroscopy) was performed for ligament injuries of the knee. These injuries occurred as a result of sports injuries or trauma. The doctors at the hospital recently performed a surgery on Dinesh (46) from Mysore who was suffering from rheumatoid arthritis of both the knees. His knee joints were replaced at the same time with a new joint called high-flex rotating platform implant. With these knees, a patient can bend knees fully, sit on the floor or can use Indian toilet. A patient can walk on the fifth day after surgery. These joints last 20 years, he said. The offer has been extended as a more number of patients were approaching the hospital.
