BIJAPUR: A flood-alert has been sounded along the Krishna and its tributaries following heavy rain in the Western Ghats. Inflow at the Alamatti Dam, which was 66,818 cusecs on Monday, increased to 90,770 cusecs on Tuesday. The water level stood at 515.77 metres as against the full reservoir level of 519.6 metres. Gross storage was 62 tmcft. Executive Engineer of Alamatti Dam Division Gopalkrishna Gupta told The Hindu that it had been decided to open some crest gates on Wednesday. The decision came following the forecast given by the Central Water Commission that the inflow would cross 1.55 lakh cusecs by Wednesday. Mr. Gupta said people living along the river were asked to move to safety. Fishermen were also asked not to go to the river till further notice. Discharge would be further increased if required, he added. The Narayanpur Dam, located 60 km downstream of Alamatti Dam, is also filling up. Today, its water level touched the 490.81 metre mark against the full reservoir level of 492.25 metres. Bagalkot district administration is gearing up to face the situation.
