Special Correspondent

"Time to decide on funds for education of archakas' children"

HYDERABAD: Two members of the Archaka Welfare Fund Board T. Ramacharyulu (representing Andhra region) and B. Rama Sharma (from Telangana) appealed to the State Government to convene a meeting of the board at the earliest possible date to decide on the assistance to be provided to the children of archakas (temple priests) for pursuing academic studies.

As per the Act

They said the last meeting of the board was held in February this year. Although, according to the Act, the board should meet once in two months, the board was not convened in the last four months.

The board members sought the intervention of Chief Minister Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy, Endowments Minister J.C.Diwakar Reddy and Endowments Commissioner A.B.Krishna Reddy to call for hold the meeting.

Applications pending

The members added that the meeting was necessary as the 2006-07 academic year had already commenced and a large number of applications for assistance and scholarships were pending.

Early sanction of assistance would provide the much sought after relief to archakas who were struggling to meet the expenditure for their children's education.

Already in distress on account of non-receipt of salaries, they were raising money through loans, the members said.
