Police fire in air to dispel irate mob

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Police opened fire in the air when two groups clashed following the victory procession of a MPTC candidate on Tuesday night in Medipally village of Yacharam mandal in neighbouring Ranga Reddy district.

Supporters of M. Jangaiah, who won as MPTC member on Bharatiya Janata Party, took out a rally in Medipally village around 8 p.m. Trouble broke out when a person, Vishnumurthy belonging to Communist Party of India allegedly tried to stop the rally saying no slogans should be raised against his party.

"Even as the CPI activist and BJP workers were exchanging heated arguments, power went off. Meanwhile, some mischievous persons started pelting stones and bricks leading to tension," Yacharam Sub-Inspector R. Devender said. A constable sustained minor injury on his head in the stone-pelting. He was treated as out-patient at a hospital.

As activists of the two groups began to gather and continued to hurl stones, police opened one round of fire to control the mob. No arrests were made.
