KOLLAM: Three fishermen who got marooned at sea on Monday morning were rescued by the Marine Enforcement personnel on Tuesday. They were brought ashore to the wharf at the Tangassery Breakwater complex. The fishermen, Kunjumon Antony, Paul Varghese and Yesudasan, all natives of Kazhakuttam in Thiruvananthapuram district, were in a dehydrated condition. They were admitted to hospital and discharged after first aid. The three had set sail in an outboard engine-fitted fibre boat from the Tangassery Fishing Harbour on Sunday afternoon. But early on Monday, the engine developed a mechanical flaw and they found themselves marooned some 29 km off the Paravur coast. When they did not return on Monday, their relatives lodged a complaint with the Marine Enforcement. Early on Tuesday morning, the rescue team began the search operations on a mechanised boat. The marooned fishermen were spotted around 11 a.m. Their boat was also brought back. Three houses on the Mundakkal coast were washed away when the sea in that area suddenly turned rough by 8 p.m. on Tuesday. Several families living in the area have been shifted to safety. Our staff reporter writes from Pathanamthitta: Several houses were damaged and standing crops estimated to be worth lakhs of rupees destroyed in the high velocity winds that lashed different parts of the district during the past two days. Ranni, Mallappally and Adoor taluks are the worst affected.
