Water level

MADURAI : Water level in the Periyar dam stood at 120.40 feet with an inflow of 1489 cusecs and a discharge of 1038 cusecs.

The level in the Vaigai dam was 45.05 feet with an inflow of 643 cusecs and a discharge of 946 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 3783 mcft.

The Periyar dam recorded 38 mm of rainfall followed by Tekkadi 20, Uthamapalayam 5, Gudalur 2, and Shanmuganadi 1.

Student killed

S. Sriram (4), a kindergarten student, was killed in a roof collapse and two of his classmates were injured at a private nursery school in Tirupparankundram near here on Tuesday.

According to police sources, the tin-sheet of a classroom gave away when a strong wind swept the locality around noon.

Sriram, who suffered grievous injuries, was rushed to a hospital where he died. The condition of two others is said to be stable.

A case under Section 304 (A) (causing death due to negligence) was registered against the school principal, the sources added.

Mangoes seized

Corporation Health officials raided the business premises of a fruit merchant at Dhalavai Agraharam and seized five tonnes of artificially ripened mangoes on Tuesday. The merchant used carbide stones to ripen the fruits, which is harmful to health. The seized fruits were destroyed and buried at Vellakkal dump yard.

Facilities inspected

The Mayor, C. Ramachandran, has asked Corporation officials to take steps to lay a tar-topped road on the northern bank of the Vaigai between Kurivikaran Salai and PTR Bridge. Inspecting civic facilities in wards 6, 7 and 8 in the north zone along with the Corporation Deputy Commissioner, C. Rajamani, the Mayor also promised to lay new roads at SMB Colony and revive the park on the Walker's Club premises near the Vandiyur tank. He said that several works to the tune of Rs.4.18 crore had been completed in the three wards and works at a cost of Rs. 5.70 crore were under way.

Special train

The Train No. 1044 Madurai-Lokmanya Tilak (weekly) express will be operated on Saturdays instead of Wednesdays with effect from July 8. However, Southern Railway will operate a special train (0629) on July 5 from Madurai to Lokmanya Tilak terminus for the benefit of passengers, who had already booked tickets.

The special will be operated as per the scheduled timings, stoppages and route of 1044 Madurai-Lokmanya Tilak express, according to a Southern Railway release.

Training programme

The Valliammal Institution at Gandhi Museum is organising a training programme on Buddhist Vipassana meditation from July 10 to 14. The subjects for training include walking meditation, description of mind and meditation of five senses and elements. For further details, dial 253 0226.
