PERUNDURAI: State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) industrial estate here has seen an increase in industrial activity in the recent past.

In the last few months 21 units commenced production in the park taking the total number of units functioning to 57. The last fiscal only 36 functioned.

    Total number

Likewise, there is a corresponding increase in land allotment. In the current financial year, 42 units have been allotted land - taking the total number of units allotted land to 142.

Of the 42 units, constructions were on at over 30 units, sources said.

    Construction

Majority of the units are dyeing-related, including those under construction.

Sources said there were 27 dyeing units and 65 had been allotted land.

And all this activity is big investment in the park. "We are seeing something like Rs. 2,000 crore being invested," sources said.

    Reverse osmosis

Among the functioning dyeing units, 14 have come together to set up a common effluent treatment plant. The rest have individual reverse osmosis (RO) plants. The new dyeing units too will go for individual plants. Sources said dyeing units were going in more for individual plants because of varied construction schedules.

"No two units are in the same stage of construction. Further, they want to start functioning immediately after construction," sources said.

The tanneries, on the other hand, are first setting up a common effluent treatment plant, which is almost complete. Over 30 units that have come together will begin production once the treatment plant becomes operational.
