KOCHI: Rainwater harvesting has been pitched as an easy solution to meeting drinking water crisis in the urban areas. Kochi too has its share of frequent disruption in water supply and scarcity during summer. Every monsoon gives Kochiites an opportunity to tap the copious flow of water during the season. Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium, under the Regional Sports Centre, has decided to harvest rainwater to meet its requirement for water. It has been over a week since the 3-lakh-litre capacity underground tank meant to store rain water was commissioned. The results are visible, says George Thomas, secretary of the Regional Sport Centre. He said that the idea to harvest rainwater stemmed from the increasing need for water at the stadium and related facilities that are used by approximately 1,000 people daily. As many as 500 children come for various sports practices and 400 members come to the stadium every day. As a result, the need for water has gone up significantly. Mr. George Thomas the facilities require 25,000 litres a day, including the water requirement for the swimming pool. The current capacity of the underground tank is sufficient for eight days. Since the monsoon this season is gaining strength, the tank is refilled daily, he said.
