There is more to rain than water conservation measures and planting of saplings. The NSS unit of the Kozhikode Medical College has been involved in these ventures too. But they also consciously organised a `Rain my life campaign', as part of the activities undertaken during the southwest monsoon this year. The objective was to familiarise the NSS volunteers on monsoon-related diseases by organising a two-day workshop on the topic. Selected NSS volunteers of Malappuram and Kozhikode district participated. The workshop highlighted the need to prevent the spread of epidemics associated with the rain as well as the therapies. The situation needed monitoring all the more because of the increasing accumulation of garbage all round, it was highlighted. The dangers of incidence of diseases such as jaundice and dysentery through contamination of food and water were the topic of discussion. Viral fever and conjunctivitis needed to be tackled too. The workshop was led by Programme Coordinator of NSS, Calicut University, Umar Farooq. Others involved in organising the residential workshop were Cyriac Job and Venkatesh, programme officers, Abdul Raheem Kapoor and T.R. Rakesh. The Kerala Government Medical College Teachers Association district unit sponsored the event. The students had planted saplings on the World Environment Day on June 5, with the assistance of the Darsana Samskarika Vedi. Tree guards have been placed around the saplings too.
