Special Correspondent

N. Sankar

CHENNAI: N. Sankar, Honorary Consul-General of Denmark for Southern India, has been decorated with the Order of the Dannebrog - Knight First Class by the Queen of Denmark in recognition of his valuable services as the Consul-General of Denmark.

Michael Sternberg, Danish Ambassador in India, handed over the award to the leading industrialist.

A Silver Cross with a red border, surmounted by a royal crown over the reigning sovereign's monogram with a silver badge and ribbon with rosette formed part of the decoration.

The Order of the Dannebrog was first instituted in 1671 by Christian V. The recognition is awarded to Danish and foreign citizens for meritorious civil or military service for contribution to the arts, sciences or business life or for working for Danish interests. The reigning monarch heads the Order.

Mr. Sankar is the Chairman of the Rs.1,600-crore Sanmar Group operating in diverse areas such as chlorochemicals, speciality chemicals, shipping and engineering.
