Letters to the Editor
The article "Rule of law and legal education" (July 4) talks of legal education as a tool to provide access to justice. As far as the ordinary citizen can see, legal education has provided only the rich and powerful access to justice. The cases of Jessica Lal, Priyadarshini Mattoo, and the like come to mind when one talks of legal education and training students in law. In Priyadarshini Mattoo's case, the judge said though he knew the accused had committed the crime, he was giving him the benefit of the doubt. It is not lack of quality education that is the bane of the Indian criminal justice system but the lack of ethics.
