Letters to the Editor
"Who can beat Brazil?" screamed a media headline during the run-up to the World Cup kickoff. The question was emphatically answered on Saturday: Zinedine Zidane. With subtle footwork that resembled that of dancer Fred Astaire, and manoeuvres that reminded one of Gary Kasparov on the chessboard, Zizou proved that he is improving with age. Surely, he can be ranked alongside Pele and Maradona.
Sannapareddy Krishna Reddy,
* * * The World Cup has descended into a European Championship with South American flair and artistry giving way to European strategy and technique. The loss of Brazil has made the championship less interesting as it was the favourite. It is now up to the finalists to produce something worth remembering for years to come.
D. Balakrishnan,
* * * World Cup soccer is not just about wonderful times, memorable moments, and bonding between nations. It is also about enhancing family ties. Office-goers are back home early, husbands help in the kitchen, children are punctual with their homework, and friends are getting together. Of course, all `good things' have short life spans but let us hope the World Cup spirit is kept alive even after the finals.
Ravia Gupta,
