NEYVELI: Readily responding to the bandh call given by the Joint Council of Traders' Associations, the trading community at Neyveli Township downed the shutters on Wednesday. Since they happen to be an aggrieved lot, they naturally empathise with the striking NLC employees, who form their client base. They bemoan that the trading activity has been greatly curtailed owing to the arbitrary rental scheme adopted by the NLC management. Joint Council president V.N. Pandarinathan told The Hindu that as many as 2,700 shopkeepers, including the pushcart owners, participated in the bandh. Given the manifold increase in rent fixed unilaterally, the traders were even ready for an indefinite closure, he pointed out. The management had now jacked up the rent from earlier 33 paise per sq. ft to Rs.4 to Rs.7.50 per sq. ft. Mr. Pandarinathan alleged that the management was adopting harsh measures to collect the rent. If the penal measures continued, the traders would go on a relay huger-strike and then opt for indefinite closure.
