Pondicherry: The recent civic polls has brought cheer to the ruling Congress after it won all the 15 seats it contested in Oulgaret municipality in the Pondicherry region. Party workers said the verdict of the civic elections, held after 38 years in Pondicherry, demonstrated that the Congress continued to hold its sway in semi urban and rural pockets.
Jubilation
The poll brought jubilation to the Congress especially since its candidate, N.S.J. Jayabal, annexed the post of chairman of the municipality. The Congress and its electoral allies in the Democratic Progressive Alliance swept 26 of the 37 wards in Oulgaret, the official French spelling for Uzhavarkkarai. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam emerged victorious in six wards, the Communist Party of India in four and the Pattali Makkal Katchi in one. The remaining 11 seats were won either by the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam or the Puducherri Munnetra Congress or Independents. The AIADMK and the PMC went it alone in the civic elections. The Congress also annexed the posts of chairmen of Mahe and Yanam municipal councils, besides emerging successful in a majority of municipal council wards in these two regions. The DMK was successful in the election to the post of chairperson of Pondicherry municipality. Reddiarpalayam, Thattanchavady and Oulgaret segments. These constituencies constitute together a larger population than that of elsewhere. Overall, the DPA annexed 76 wards in municipal councils out of the 122 seats contained in all the five municipalities spread over Pondicherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam regions.
