KARAIKAL: The Congress has won 12 council seats in the civic elections out of 27 in the five commune panchayats of Kottucherry, Nedungadu, Neravy, T.R. Pattinam and Tirunallar in Karaikal district in the Union Territory. Votes were counted on July 3 and the results were declared on Tuesday. Independents won six seats, the DMK five, the AIADMK and Puduchery Munnetra Congress two each. In the Kottucherry commune panchayat, out of the five seats , the Congress won three, the DMK and Independent one each. Out of four seats in Nedungadu panchayat, the Congress bagged three and Independent one. In the Neravy , the Puduchery Munnetra Congress (PMC) won two seats and the AIADMK and Independent one each. In T.R. Pattinam out of the five council seats, the DMK bagged three, the Congress and Independent one each. Among the nine council seats in Tirunallar, the Congress had secured five, Independents two and the DMK and the AIADMK one each. The councillors will elect the chairman of the respective commune panchayat. Meanwhile, R. Prabhavathi (Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam), the chairperson-elect of the Karaikal municipality and councillors are expected to take charge on July 8. The Congress had secured seven out of 18 council seats in the Karaikal municipality followed by the DMK five, the DMDK three, Independents two and Puducherry Munnetra Congress one.
