User charges at AIIMS put on hold

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Centre has decided to put on hold the user charges in the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

The decision was taken at a meeting of the AIIMS Institute body, where a majority of the members wanted the charges rolled back.

"The Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry has decided to restore the old rates, until the committee, set up to review the rationalisation of the user charges, submits its report," Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss told presspersons.

The introduction of user charges triggered a sharp reaction from a cross section of people and more than 100 MPs urged that the Government immediately withdraw the "anti-people" measure.

The MPs met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and submitted a memorandum, pointing out that the "huge increase" in the user charges had put tremendous burden on poor patients, many of whom came from outside Delhi.
