TUTICORIN: Minister for Local Administration M.K. Stalin on Wednesday said massive projects had been chalked out to improve basic amenities across the State, thereby enhancing the living standards of residents. Speaking to reporters, he said a 10 lakh-litre capacity overhead water tank would be constructed near Melapalayam in the district at a cost of Rs. 46 lakh to improve the supply. Battered roads at Melapalayam would be re-laid at a cost of Rs. 5 crore. He said plans were on to formulate new schemes for solving perennial drinking water shortage in Wards 19, 26 and 27 of the Tirunelveli Corporation. Steps would be taken to construct an overhead tank at Kadayanallur with technical assistance from the Tamil Nadu Water and Drainage Board (TWAD). Asked whether the Government was taking steps to overcome the lacunae in the combined drinking water schemes across the State, he said a committee headed by Collectors would be formed to discuss the problems. He said the Government planned to implement underground sewerage schemes at Sankarankoil, Tenkasi and Kadayanallur municipalities, similar to the one being implemented within Tirunelveli Corporation limits. The Government planned to come out with an attractive scheme to overcome problems pertaining to construction of houses in unapproved layouts.
